How to Safely Visit Your Home’s Construction Site

Building your dream home is an exciting experience. You are probably anxiously awaiting the day you get to move in, decorate, and feel comfortable in your new home. Throughout construction, it is a good idea to visit the construction site to review progress so that your builder can address your concerns. If you choose to visit, make sure you take the time to plan the visit to make it as safe as possible.

Let the Builders Know

Before you visit your home’s construction site, you will want to first alert the builders that you would like to visit. This way, your builder will be able to coordinate with your foreman to get you in the house. It is never good to drop in for a surprise visit, because you do not know what is planned for construction that day. Depending on what they are working on, you may not even be able to go into your house. Your builder will likely be pleased to show you around, but giving advance notice is the right way to go about this. This way, you can get a guided tour to see everything you need to see.

Schedule a Good Time

Once you have let your builders know that you want to see your house, they can help schedule a good time for you to come. While it is fine to walk or drive by your home during construction, if you want to go inside and see everything, you should schedule a time to take a tour. Your builder will know the construction schedule, and will therefore know when the best time for you to come. Construction sites are active, so you do not want to visit during a time when there are certain areas of your home that are off-limits, or if there are features you want to see that are not yet installed. Scheduling a time will also ensure that the foreman can carve out time in their day to give you a tour.

Think About What You Want to See

Before you visit your home under construction, you should think about what it is you want to see. Make a list of the rooms or features that are most important for you to see, so you can be assured you will be able to see them when you visit. All of that will depend on the construction schedule, so reach out to your builder early if there are certain milestones you don’t want to miss. Bring your list with you so you don’t forget anything.

Take Safety Precautions

Construction sites are busy, active places with a lot of moving parts. In one room, drywall may be going up, in another flooring may be going down, and in another, windows are being installed. There will be a number of people there on any given day doing a number of different jobs. Given all of this activity, safety is the number one most important thing to be aware of when you visit your home. Make sure you are wearing a brightly covered safety vest, protective eyewear, and a hard hat. All of these items will make sure that other people can see you, which keeps you safe from being hurt. You need to stay alert and listen to the instructions given to you both by the foreman and by anyone else who may be working on your house. Ideally, your home construction will include features that will make it a safer workplace for everyone. Self-dumping trash hoppers make a worksite safer by keeping dangerous debris off the ground.

Respect the Foreman

Your foreman is there to make sure that everything goes smoothly. They have a lot to manage, from project schedules, to deliveries, to subcontractors, to other construction workers. If they have agreed to give you a tour, they have put everything else on pause to give you their full attention. For this reason, you should respect them and respect their rules. Your foreman knows the most about home construction out of anyone on the job, and it is their responsibility to make sure that your home is built to the highest quality. Treat them with courtesy and kindness, and feel free to ask them any questions you have about the project or the process.

Take Pictures

As you go through your home under construction, be sure and document what you are seeing. This will help you keep a thorough record of construction progress because you can organize photographs by date or by room in your house. If you have any questions later on for the foreman, you can use these photographs to illustrate your questions and concerns. In addition, these photos will be great to look back on once your home is completed.

Dress Appropriately

When you visit your home under construction, you will want to dress appropriately. The first thing this means is closed-toed shoes. Construction sites are filled with nails, screws, wood, and other materials that can injure your feet, so it is important to protect them. You should wear something comfortable that you can move around in, as well as something you won’t mind getting dirty. Avoid wearing long scarves, fringe, or anything that could get stuck or attached to something.

Know the Risk

Before you visit the construction site, make sure you are aware of the risk you are taking in visiting. Even with all the right safety precautions, accidents can still happen. It is unlikely that the personal injury insurance your builder carries will cover you. Being aware of the risk you take in visiting will save you from surprises later on.

Visiting your home under construction can be a fun activity that lets you see the nuts and bolts of how it’s done. Before you visit your home construction site, you should plan ahead and prepare so that both you and your builder are ready for the visit. That way you can make the most of your visit, and do so safely.
